The Language of Advertising
In this edition of Look magazine we see singer Ellie Goulding featured on the front cover. As a class our task was to identify the various forms of language devices used within the magazine front cover. Here I shall be analysing the different forms of language devices that were identified on the front cover. The language devices consisted of:
- Mode of Address: "The Health Scare That's Changing My Life"
- Alliteration: "Really reverse" "Best Style & Beauty Hacks"
- Rule of Three/Power of Three: "NYC! LONDON! MILAN!"
- Colloquial Language: "Amp", "Are You A Rinsta Or A Finsta?"
- Emotive Language: "Scare"
- Monosyllabic: "Look", "Ellie"
- Personal Pronouns: "You'll Love"
- Abbreviation: "It's LBD Season", "Amp Up Your Look"
- Rhetorical Questions: "Are You A Rinsta Or A Finsta?", "Skin Damage: Can You Really Reverse It?"
- Exclamation Mark: "Amp Up Your Look!", "It's LBD Season"
- Repetition: "Look" (Title), "Look" (On side next to the title)
- Rhyme: "Are You A Rinsta Or A Finsta?", "Frock Drop"
Here's the descriptions belonging to these devices:
- Mode of Address - The way in which the media addresses the audience e.g. 1st or 3rd person
- Alliteration - A literary device that can be repeated by using its sound.
- Rule of Three/Power of Three - Items/words that are listed in 3 e.g "I need to buy water, bread and cereal".
- Colloquial Language - This is presented in the form of slang.
- Emotive Language - Emotional response is created for the audience. Either positive or negative emotions.
- Monosyllabic - A word consisting of one syllable.
- Personal Pronouns - Words that contrasts a person stating "I, me, my, we, they, you, she, he" etc.
- Abbreviation - A shortened word or phrase.
- Rhetorical Questions - A question asked without expecting a response.
- Exclamation Mark - To express a feeling of intense emotion e.g. "Stop!"
- Repetition - The usage of words more than once.
- Rhyme - Similar sounding words.

As we know, there are various types of magazine genres. These include:
Music:
Billboard is a popular example of a music magazine. It was established in 1894 by William H. Donaldson and James Hennegan.
Various artists around the world receive recognition for their achievement in the Billboard 100 charts for breaking record sales and having number 1 hits in the music industry.
This particular edition features singer, Rihanna.
Sport:
This edition of this sports magazine features Arsenal's Olivier Giroud. As another example of a particular magazine, we see different types of sports being illustrated throughout. Some including specific facts and figures about sports teams and sports celebrities.
Fashion:
'Harper's Bazaar' debuted in 1867. It was also known as America's first fashion magazine.
In this feature of 'BAZAAR' magazine we see supermodel Tyra Banks on the front cover.
It's been said in its early beginnings that Bazaar only targeted those of the middle and upper class community.
Bazaar promoted fashion suited for women during the time of the suffrage movement for women supporting feminism.
News:
Time magazine began it's first issue in March 1923. Here we see America's current president, Barack Obama in this issue.
Time magazine was created by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce and it was quick to become the first weekly news magazine in the US.
Electronics/Technology:
Over the years we've been able to see technology advance drastically. With popular companies such as Apple and Samsung being two of the most famous technological companies in the world, it evident as to why members of the public would want to stay up to date with their own technological devices. Electronical/technological magazine are able to provide readers with knowledge of technology and devices - plus it provides entertainment.
Teen:
As it is stated in the name, 'Teenvogue' is a popular magazine for teenagers across the world and was first published in 2003. The front cover features teen actress Chloe Grace Moretz. Having a teen on the front cover to represent a teen magazine is a clever idea as it helps with its promotion. A popular actress Moretz is, will most likely target more teens to purchase this magazine.
Glamour:
'Glamour magazine' (aka Glamour Mag) is a popular women's magazine that was published in the United States in April 1939. Originally, Glamour magazine was called 'Glamour of Hollywood'. Ever since, Glamour magazine has expanded to several countries including; UK, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and many more.
Food:
'GoodFood' is targeted towards all food lovers and chefs in the world. Food magazines are essential to those who love to cook as they can provide recipes and ingredients for dishes that derive from different parts of the world.
Lifestyle:
Lifestyle magazines serve an all-round purpose as they can provide information and knowledge about the human body and how we should take care of ourselves.
